In
1827 the Hotel incorporated the local excise office and, additionally, in 1841
it became a posting house on the chartered run between London and Edinburgh. The
journey time (including halt times) took 44 hours! In
the eighteenth Century the Earl of Tankerville (from whom we get our name) used
the Hotel to advantage when he had more guests than he could reasonably accommodate
at Chillingham Castle. Chillingham is known throughout the world for its famous
White Cattle, which are the purest surviving native wild cattle directly descended
from the wild ox, which roamed northern Britain in the Bronze Age. |
